PFAS regulations are becoming stricter and more widespread, disrupting product development and creating uncertainty. One major challenge for the supply chain is the lack of consistent definitions across different regulations.

How pfasID helps:

  • Proactively identifies potential PFAS risks by screening against multiple PFAS definitions, including:

    • Defined regulatory lists

    • Structural definitions of PFAS

  • Simplifies compliance with evolving regulations

  • Saves time and resources by identifying potential PFAS early

SCREENING FOR PFAS

With pfasID, users can assess PFAS risks using authoritative lists and structural definitions. The tool simplifies the process into the following steps:

1. Enter Chemical Information

  • Input a chemical name or CAS#.

2. List Screening

  • Checks the chemical against established lists, such as those from the US EPA and OECD.

3. Structural Screening

  • Evaluates chemical structure using a SMILES string against established PFAS structural definitions.

The tool will be updated as regulatory and scientific understanding evolves.

Actionable Results, Risk Management Insights

Users received clear indicators for each chemical entered. Results include:

Pass: Chemical not listed on OECD Comprehensive Global Database of PFAS or USEPA PFAS Inventory and does not contain structural alerts

Fail: Chemical listed on OECD Comprehensive Global Database and/or the USEPA PFAS Inventory

Warning: Chemical structure indicates potential PFAS status based on ECHA, OECD, Ontochem, and/or EPA definition(s)

Insufficient Structural Information: Insufficient structural information to determine PFAS status

Organize
Projects,
Collaborate
with Reports

Each users has a dashboard, a portfolio of projects, as well as detailed chemical information.

Results can be shared by downloading a project to an excel spreadsheet or generating a report for B2B communications which may help communicate early assurance of the absence of intentionally-added PFAS.

An Invitation to Collaborate

Additional lists and definitions will be added to pfasID as new regulations emerge. Interested parties are invited to help make the tool more robust.

pfasID is part of a larger effort called, PFACTS: Faster Solutions for Forever Chemicals.

PFACTS is an NSF-funded collaboration of academic researchers, industry partners, and nonprofit organizations. The three-year project is focused on developing tools to identify products with PFAS, accelerate the search for PFAS substitutes with the help of generative AI, and recommend materials for capturing PFAS at manufacturing sites.
